My student affairs philosophy is simple; student affairs professionals need to focus first and foremost on the student and their development while they are in college so that when they leave the institution they can make an impact on their own lives and community. As a student affairs professional, I must be mindful that any student that I work with is a whole individual, who is influenced by their background, history, and upbringing. When I work with students, I want to positively impact them during their collegiate years in all aspects of their development especially within the areas of their social, moral, and intellectual development. When students decide to pursue higher education, they want to discover new things, have a different experience, and ultimately get a job after graduation or some schooling and in my role as a student affairs professional I can positively impact their life.
Student affairs professionals need to make sure that they are allowing students to develop diverse thoughts, opinions, and statements that help advance their critical thinking and expanding their transferable skills. When these things are accomplished, students have the tools and abilities to transition from teenagers to adults.
